There were three equipment levels in this lineup, including the T6 Ocean, the T6 Coast and the T6 Beach. T6.1 California Ocean released September 2019. Jun 15, 2019. #2. Biggest plus automatic is that in combination with cruise control long trips need no attention to gear changes up hills. If ACC (automatic cruise control) is fitted then that in conjunction with the gearbox keeps a safe distance from the vehicle in front, in town or on busy motorways etc. Automatic isn't as good as a manual
Jan 21, 2012. #7. OK! I own a Mazda Bongo and a California. Many posts have stated how great the Cali is and I echo this. The Bongo is a marvellous vehicle, the seats I find are more confortable than the Cali's. The automatic gears and great power steering of the Bongo is second to none.
Especially the light oak finish in the Coast model (don't like it so much in the darker variant used in the Ocean). Brightens the interior considerably which already has a fair amount of grey. I was a little concerned that it extends all the way through to the tailgate so will have to get a rubber mat to protect it from the folding ebike.

It’s arguably more of a hero than the Fezza, though, laser-guided at its target audience with a truly precise purpose and exceedingly clever - Page continues belowVan-based campers are available in all shapes and sizes, of course, but VW boasts that the Cali is the only one with its kitchen and bedrooms built in from birth in the factory, rather than afterwards via a third-party company. It also has some unbeatable heritage, tracing its roots back to those classic 21-window VW Campers of the what’s new?Essentially the California has been updated because the van upon which it’s based – VW’s Transporter – has just reached its sixth generation. Naturally, there’s not been much change in the way of design, with fancier headlights and some braver colour schemes about the sum of news lies beneath the Cali's boxy exterior. But the Cali is as much a rival for 20 fortnights in Mallorca as it is the Porsche Boxster with which its prices you buy one of these because you want the flexibility of throwing a bunch of stuff in it and just going somewhere, quite probably at the drop of a Goretex hat and with some sort of lifestyle equipment attached to the California is so much more palatable than a motorhome, or the dreaded caravan. It’s more appropriate on single-carriageway roads on bank holiday weekends, for starters, but it’s also so, so easy to not going to talk about actual handling, are you?Maybe a little. The truth is the Cali grips well and doesn’t roll anywhere near as much as you might think, so cornering speeds will be dictated by how much you value the crockery in the cupboards, not its dynamic ability. And the driving position isn’t quite as stoically upright as its van roots might have you fearing. Sensors and a camera can ease any parking performance?While the entry-level engine is predictably the running cost champion with a combined its 0-62mph time doesn’t lie. With tonnes to shift when empty, it’s slow, and fully loaded it’ll require some proper pedalling up better choosing one of the other engines: the 148bhp tune, a little over two grand more, is more than game enough, and uses barely any less gearboxes operate slickly, while front-driven Calis don’t feel any harder work on road than those with 4Motion, so the rest of the spec depends on how easy-going you like your journeys between campsites, and how off-piste those sites actually probably buy the Beach and a portable stove for maximum flexibility, too. Get a seven seater and a pop-up tent for extra passengers and you’ve probably rinsed every last drop of practicality from an already quite able ‘car’.So is the California still a TG hero?Unquestionably. No change was strictly needed, in truth, so instead VW has focused on further rounding off the sharp, van-based edges and created an even more car-like experience. It’s a doddle to drive and a joy to explore its various nooks and crannies, such as the fold-out picnic table and chairs hidden in the door a Cali didn’t make sense to you before, it still won’t. But for those who get it, this is (unless Mercedes brings its Marco Polo to Britain) as petrolhead-friendly as campervanning gets. Smart dashboard with high-quality controlsLots of storage space and cubbiesHigh driving position, solid build quality The California is blessed with great forward visibility thanks to the high seating position – it’s high for a van, let alone a car or SUV – and all of the secondary controls are sensibly laid out and clearly labelled, regardless of whether you’re in a pre- or post-facelift model. There is also a vast amount of useful storage within an arm’s reach of the driver, from the double-decker door bins to a variety of cup and bottle holders. The updated dashboard in the takes this even further, despite having an even smarter and car-like appearance. Either way, you’re more likely to have trouble remembering where you put something than struggle to find somewhere to put it in the first place. Interior upgrades for the 2019-onwards California facelift As well as changing the UK trim line up to Coast and Ocean for 2019 (ditching the more basic Beach until late 2020, when it was reintroduced) Volkswagen has made a number of detail improvements to the California’s interior. The one you certainly won’t miss is the new dashboard, which looks much sharper with its newly integrated infotainment screens running VW’s MIB3 software and complete with voice control, on-board Wi-Fi and other connectivity features. Losing the physical volume knob for the stereo seems a bit of a shame, though. Ocean models get a fancy second screen called the Digital Cockpit in place of a conventional instrument cluster. And although this is a touch harder on the eyes, the customisable manner in which you can display information here and on the central touchscreen means you’ll find everything you could want to know available at glance. Speaking of screens, on top models you’ll quickly notice that there’s now another one lurking above the rear-view mirror. This controls all the camping functions, including the pop-up roof, the auxiliary heating, the lighting and the fridge. It also has a set of digital levels to help you park the California as level as possible and stop things rolling across the cabin. The high-set gearlever even makes gearchanges a relaxing affair, while the clarity of the instrumentation gives you easy access to all the most important information. This extends to the touchscreen infotainment systems, which are straightforward to use on all versions. Refinement We generally use this section of a Parkers review to talk about noise, vibration and harshness – NVH as automotive engineers like to put it – but in the VW California you will experience this in a different way to almost any other vehicle on sale. Which is to say the most distracting thing about driving it is the sound of all the pots and pans and other cooking paraphernalia rattling around in the back… This aside, there’s a bit of engine noise when accelerating hard – reduced in facelift models but entirely acceptable at any rate – but wind noise is well suppressed. Unseemly vibrations aren’t really an issue; VW’s latest diesels are smooth, and for a big hollow structure, the California is impressively stiff. Comfy seats up front, loads of legroom in the back The front seats are comfortable and highly adjustable (they even swivel round to create a lounge-like interior when you’re parked); the standard rear bench – which converts into a bed remember – isn’t quite as comfy on the posterior, but you do get loads of legroom. As for ride comfort, the California is a touch bumpier than a conventional car over rougher surfaces, but it generally delivers a relaxed, unfussy experience that once again ensures you should arrive at your destination ready to enjoy your camping holiday – or at least a good night’s kip.
